The atrium is usually a part of some other structure. It is an all glass enclosure designed to provide the illusion of being outdoors, while still in a climate-controlled environment. Heating and cooling system costs are much higher than other structures because of the volatile temperature swings that can occur in an atrium due to solar gain, and lack of insulation.
