Silos, Horizontal
They also are called bunker or trench silos and may be built into the ground or free-standing. The sides and end (only one end is closed) will generally be concrete but treated wood can also be used. The floor will also be concrete. They can be laid out as a single silo or several silos next to each other, in which case, they would all share a common back wall. The height of the sidewalls will vary from 8 feet to 16 feet high and the lengths can be from 40 feet to 200 feet long. Widths of individual silos will be from 15 feet to 70 feet wide. Once filled with feed, the top will generally be covered with a plastic covering and weighted down with old tires or other heavy objects to prevent spoilage.
