Fencing, Wood Post and Rail
For a basic definition of fences, see Fencing. Two types of construction can be found in a wood fence. The first style would be wood posts either 4 x 4 or 6 x 6 placed from 8 to 12 feet apart with 2 x 6 wood rails nailed or screwed to the posts. If the aesthetic value of the fence is an issue, then the post and rail will be rough sawn or split wood. The post will have notches carved in it to accept the rail ends. These fences are generally not painted but left in a natural state. A clear wood preservative may be applied.
